Over-the-Top, Roku®, Netflix®, Hulu®… What does it all mean???

In the ever-changing world we live in, there are always new ways to do the things we have always done.  For example, the automobile made travel more convenient, the microwave oven made cooking faster, and fiber optics made communications clearer.

The way we watch television is no exception; the internet is making television viewing more affordable! The days of costly cable or satellite television service, which was once necessary to watch the best movies, sports, and television series available, are coming to an end.  The Internet of today puts this entertainment at your fingertips. This Internet-based television programming is often called “Over-The-Top” or “streamed” programming.

To get “Over-the-Top” programming, all you really need is a good Internet connection and one of the following:

  • A Smart TV (a type of modern television with built-in ‘apps’ for popular services such as Netflix®, Hulu®, or Amazon Prime Video®)
  • or an Internet TV device such as a Roku®, Amazon Fire TV®, or Apple TV® device that plugs into your TV
  • or a computer

You might say “But I Bet It’s Complicated…”

Picture of a hand plugging an Internet streaming device into a televisionIT’S REALLY NOT THAT COMPLICATED! And Chickamauga Telephone Company is here to help! For example, maybe you want to try out Netflix, an extremely user-friendly and popular way to watch movies and some of the best new shows that you won’t find on any cable or satellite provider. Maybe your television isn’t a “Smart” TV, so you go to one of the many places in Fort Oglethorpe or Chattanooga that sell Roku devices. For purposes of this example let’s say you end up buying a Roku device that you plug into your television. The Roku device’s instructions come up on your television screen and walk you through getting things set up to begin using the device, step-by-step. Once the device’s setup is complete, you can use the remote control to choose the Netflix app. The Netflix app then asks you for some basic payment information needed to start your account, and once you’ve entered that information and agreed to their service terms and their monthly price, you have access to thousands and thousands of movies and TV shows with just a few clicks of the remote control. That would make you part of the more than 40 million U.S. subscribers to Netflix (source: http://expandedramblings.com/index.php/netflix_statistics-facts/).

“But I want to watch the local news…”

You can still use your TV to watch your local television stations. If you live in an area where an antenna doesn’t get good reception, Chickamauga Telephone offers a package of local channels, delivered over the same lines that bring telephone service to your house. Check out the CTC-tv page for details!

“I’ll miss certain cable channels I’m used to having, and I’d really miss my college football…”

Did you know that Sling TV® offers a service package of some of the most popular cable channels deliverable via several brands of “Over-The-Top” devices? They even have a sports package add-on that includes several of our area’s favorite sports channels! Even ESPN® is available as a streamed programming service.

“But I want variety, I’m used to having 200 channels of programming…”

Most “Over-the-Top” devices also have access to dozens or even hundreds of free video channels as well as many premium paid video channels, such as HBO NOW®. There is amazing variety available on these devices.

Are you thinking “I’m Too Old…”?

Some people may think that “Over-the-Top” movie and television viewing is for the Millennial and Gen-X generations, but in reality, 26% of Baby Boomers use Netflix, according to a statistic found at expandedramblings.com. That’s not a small number of people. It’s not just for kids; there are plenty of parents and grandparents out there who enjoy their “Over-the-Top” television programming. Let us show you just how easy and affordable it can be!
